I’ve Created a Monster + Ziwi Peak’s Deer Shank

Teton is the ultimate treat snob. Perhaps I should say instead that he has a refined palate.

You’d think with all the snow we’ve had in the Seattle area and the extra energy he exerted playing in it he would want ALL THE TREATS, but that hasn’t been the case.

The treat snob himself got a drool-worthy treat from Chewy.com this month – Ziwi Peak’s Deer Shank Bone Dog Chew.

ZiwiPeak Deer Shank

This chew, made of venison shank bone and beef esophagus, comes in either a full or half bone. We opted for the full bone because Teton is 40 pounds and your average medium-sized dog so I prefer giving him larger chews to eliminate some of the choking concern. (Of course, dogs can choke on bones of any size so you should always watch them regardless of their size and the size of the chew.)

Ziwi Peak’s Deer Shank Bone Dog Chew is made in New Zealand from free-range, grass-fed sources. It’s full of nutrients from the bone marrow, itself, and assists with dental hygiene since it’s a heartier chew.

Teton was 0% interested in this chew, so we hope his buddy Copper will enjoy it.

I think Teton is the exception to the rule on this one and that Ziwi Peak’s Deer Shank Bone Dog Chew will be a big hit with 99% of the other dogs out there. If your dog loves a good chew and you’re looking for a safer alternative to rawhide or want to mix things up with a new flavor, give this a go!

Barkworthies Elk Antler

A few weeks ago, the kind folks at Barkworthies sent Teton an elk antler to review.

Barkworthies has quite the assortment of chews ranging from bully sticks to pork chews to  moose, elk, and deer antlers. Since Teton has tried a lot of different chews in the past, I wanted to see what he’d think of an elk antler since he hasn’t had one for five or more years.

I requested a large split elk antler, which means that the antler is between 4 and 5 inches and has exposed bone marrow. As I said, Teton has had antlers in the past, and I remembered that he wasn’t as interested in the non-split antlers as he was in the split ones.

Barkworthies antlers are naturally shed, sourced from the Rocky Mountains, and are one of the most durable chews you can get for your dog. Many dogs will happily spend hours working to get the marrow out of an antler. Because of this, they aid in dental hygiene as they clean your dog’s teeth while they chew.

Teton was very curious about this chew at first. He licked and sniffed it a lot.

Once he found the marrow he gave it a few minutes of gnawing…

…and then he walked away and laid down.

So…plan B. I brought the antler to my friend to give to her dog, Copper.

And he’s been obsessing over it ever since.

Some dogs just don’t like antlers. And, we all know that Teton can be a little picky when it comes to chews.

For us, chews like the Earth Animal No-Hide Chews and the Himalayan Dog Chew will be our go-tos, but for your dog, especially if he or she is a voracious chewer, antlers are definitely worth trying! They can be on the more expensive side but they last for a very long time and will do great things for your dog’s teeth and gums.
